Quality Academy to boost patients’ experience at treatment centre
A new Quality Academy, set up at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre, is set to boost patients’ health and experience of treatment.
The academy will support any member of staff to initiate and trial ideas that could improve patient treatment and wellbeing. Projects that show a tangible and repeatable benefit to patients will then be replicated throughout the centre’s departments and potentially across other Care UK treatment centres around the country.
Marie Simpson, the centre’s clinical governance manager, said: “Staff involved in quality improvement projects will be mentored and coached via the quality team, with six-weekly meetings to discuss progress, challenges and results. This will involve teaching sessions on quality improvement, sharing project management strategies and mentoring and coaching.
“We know that improvements are regularly made throughout departments, by people who do the job every day and who are the real experts. The Quality Academy will bring structure to these improvements and will give the opportunity to staff to share their findings and improve the service for patients.”
Early projects include providing further support to patients who are deaf or hard of hearing and surveying patients to find out what support they found most important when undergoing treatment, in order to replicate it across wards and other treatment centres.
Once a year the treatment centre will host a Quality Academy presentation evening, where staff can showcase their quality improvement projects, and their benefits to patients, before an invited audience of Clinical Commissioning Groups and patients.
Hospital director Rob Thomas said: “This is a wonderful initiative and well-worth the investment of time and resources, as it will have benefits for patients across the centre and potentially more widely across Care UK centres.
“It will also benefit the team, giving them mentoring and development opportunities to boost their careers as well as confirming the enormous value we and patients place on their work and professionalism.”
